Like Roy, I'm old enough to have been a mainframe user/programmer. I can see his comparison to mainframes, but I submit that he's missing the point.
* no batch processing anymore; it's effectively real time
* no mainframe-based system would allow you to send a request for more computing/network/storage bandwidth and give it to you in minutes
Cloud computing has the potential to allow libraries and other orgs to respond very quickly to requests for new services, develop new services, and manage dynamic loads. The old mainframe models had you buying (incredibly expensive) blocks of time.

The last, maybe best point, is because the primary interface is HTTP(S), you can expose data for use by others extremely quickly and easily. Back in the day, you spooled up a tape, recorded, then mailed it to your customer... :-)

[...] This may have been somewhat of a set up instead of truly believed statements, for it generated much debate. Understanding the finer points is difficult, not just because of the technical language, but also because of some academic and philosophical jargon. Luckily for us, the entire program is available to view again and again at LitaBlog. Also, David Lee King seemed to understand the finer point a bit better than I did and bullet pointed them on his blog. [...]
