Another good game engine that was recently made available for non-commercial use is Unity. It has the added advantage of running on Mac and linux boxes and is has some pretty easy to follow tutorials.

<cite>
Ever wanted to make a game, but didn’t know where to start?
</cite>

I'm not sure this is a great starting place as you say. The fact that they open-sourced it doesn't reduce the need for both general and highly specific programming knowledge.

Thats not THAT amazing, another free development kit for free is for the source engine, but the fact that this is the one you use to have to pay for, not an sdk. that is impressive.
